MACROS
Macronutrients are the nutrients that our body needs in large amounts to function properly. There are three main macronutrients: carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.
Carbohydrates are the body's main source of energy and can be found in foods like grains, fruits, and vegetables. Proteins help with building and repairing muscle and can be found in foods like meats, dairy, and beans. Fats are important for brain development and cell growth and can be found in foods like oils, nuts, and avocados.
You can think of macronutrients as the building blocks of a healthy diet, like the bricks in a house. Carbohydrates provide the energy to power our body, proteins help build and repair muscle, and fats are important for brain development and cell growth. Each macronutrient plays a unique and important role in our overall health and it is important to have a balance of all three in our diet.
MACROS CATEGORIES
CARBS
Most people think of bread, cereal, and potatoes when they hear the word carbohydrates. But the list of foods that contain carbohydrates is actually quite extensive. Carbohydrates are essentially sugar molecules. Carbohydrates that contain longer sugar molecules are called complex carbohydrates and take longer to be broken down by the body. They tend to be healthier for you when compared to simple carbohydrates, like table sugar, which is quickly broken down by the body and can cause a spike in blood sugar.
PROTEIN
Proteins help build bones, muscle, blood, and skin. There are two main types of protein-containing foods, lean and fatty proteins — lean proteins (foods containing protein and less fat) being the healthier choice.
FAT
Fat is needed to make key compounds—such as hormones—and also help your body absorb essential fat-soluble vitamins like vitamins A, D, E, and K. Saturated fats (the less healthy fat found mostly in animal meats and full-fat dairy), however, should be limited to less than 10% of calories.
